Call for Advanced Seminars (Download a PDF flyer)

The MDM series of conferences, since its debut in December 1999, has established itself as a prestigious forum for the exchange of innovative and significant research results in mobile data management. The term mobile in MDM has been used from the very beginning in a broad sense to encompass all aspects of mobility - aspects related to wireless, portable and tiny devices. The conference provides unique opportunities for researchers, engineers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore new ideas, techniques, and tools, and to exchange experiences.

As we progress into the next decade of the 21st century we might encounter a disruption, such as a tiny processor billion times faster than the contemporary ones, in the technology base of the current mobile ecosystem. The 2011 International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2011), to be held in Luleå, Norrbotten, Sweden (June 6-9, 2011) solicits Advanced Seminars that would give to the listeners a vision of how the mobile ecosystem or its part could look around 2015 or even beyond 2020 when Moore’s law is perhaps not any more valid. The vision should be based on valid research on mobile technology, business or community aspects. We are thus soliciting seminars that will tell us what will wait for us with high probability in 2015, but also seminars that discuss the possible futures after 2020.

Examples of possible topics (Note: the list is just indicative!)

    - Moore’s law is dead; terminals beyond silicon
    - Ultimate ubiquitous society
    - Kurzweils’ singularity real and near?
    - Brain as interface to mobile infrastructure
    - Green mobility
    - Ultimate context-aware services
    - Advanced location-based services
    - Mobile cloud computing

Format for an advanced seminar and a proposal to run one

An advanced seminar will be part of the main conference program occupying one or two full sessions (1.5/3 hours). The planned length should be indicated in the proposal. We plan to include into the conference program up to three advanced seminars. Those running an advanced seminar should prepare material (Slides, videos, demonstrations etc.) for the intended duration. The scientific and technical level of the material should be such that an average conference participant understands it without larger effort. The listeners/participants can be involved in small tasks, if appropriate. The proposal for an advanced seminar should be submitted as MS Word or PDF document and should contain the following information:

    - Title of the intended seminar
    - Names and affiliations of the persons proposing and running the seminar
    - Duration of the seminar and desirable number of participants
    - A half-page abstract describing the main ideas of the seminar and the background research
    - Description of what possible special ICT infrastructure is needed to run the seminar
    - Other possible conditions

The submissions must be sent as an email-attachment to both Advanced Seminar Chairs to: karl.aberer@epfl.ch; jari.veijalainen@jyu.fi .

Both chairs are available to answer questions concerning the Advanced Seminars. Each accepted seminar must compile an abstract (max. 4 pages in IEEE format) of the seminar to be included into the proceedings (Vol. 2) of the MDM conference. The abstracts must adhere to the general formatting guidelines of the proceedings. The abstracts must be sent to the Seminar Chairs as MS Word file. At least one of the proposers should register to the conference as soon as the registration opens.
