MDM 2020 Best Paper Award

Learning Semantic Relationships of Geographical Areas based on Trajectories
- Saim Mehmood and Manos Papagelis

Citation for the award:

"The paper uses trajectory data to learn semantic relationships between different geographical areas using deep learning techniques. The approach builds on network representation learning by modeling trajectories as random walks on a grid graph. In addition, a statistical method is designed that allows to compare the learned representations to a theoretical null model. The paper introduces a novel approach to mining trajectory data with the potential to spur new research in the analysis of spatial data."
